It may be tempting to jump on the solar energy bandwagon—after all, who wouldn’t want to reduce their electricity bill and help the environment? But before you sign on the dotted line, let’s talk about a few things that often get overlooked.
Did you know that many solar companies are owned by investors in other countries? Many countries have heavier restrictions on solar for various reasons. Think about that. It’s kind of like how some countries ban certain food additives... yet, they are still legal (for now) here in the U.S. That alone should make you pause and dig a little deeper before making such a major financial decision. This is a big deal—so be curious, ask questions, and do your homework!
Here are four critical things to consider before making the investment:
How long are you planning to stay in your home? Solar panels can be a long-term investment, and while they may add value, they don’t always make selling your home easier—especially if there’s a lease or loan attached. If you plan on moving in the next few years, the math might not work in your favor.
How are you paying for it? Cash is always best. Leases and loans become a problem when selling. The new owner will need to financially qualify to take over the loan or lease, which impacts their debt, which may cause them to be unqualified for a mortgage.
Is it allowed in your area? Not every city, county, or HOA welcomes solar with open arms. Some areas have strict regulations, while others may require special permits. Do your due diligence so you’re not caught off guard after installation.
Have you fully researched the company? Not all solar companies are created equal. Some offer solid warranties and great customer service, while others disappear when issues arise. Read reviews, check their track record, and confirm that they’ll be around to honor their warranty if you need repairs down the road.
At the end of the day, solar energy can be a fantastic investment—but only if it makes sense for your specific situation. Be informed, ask the tough questions, and don’t let a slick salesperson pressure you into a decision you might regret later.
As always, knowledge is power—so do your homework and make the choice that’s right for you!
